*The Unexpected Light of Thomas Alva Edison

Author: Raymond Arroyo
Illustrator: Kristina Gehrmann
Released: March 21, 2023
Publisher: Zonderkidz
Page Count: 32 pages
Ages: 6-10 years

You something new every day. I haven’t read too much about Thomas Edison beyond the basic stuff they teach briefly in school so this was a fun read from a slightly different view of him as a kid to adult. I think kids who read this book will be able to relate to Thomas as they learn about his curious nature. But we also see a different side of how this cause tension in the classroom and how his mom ended up having to be his biggest supporter and advocate. I enjoyed the Author’s Note at the end of the book which tells more about Thomas’ mother. There is also a section with more books you can read to learn about his life. – Joyce, mom

*Her Story, Her Strength

Illustrator: Sarah Parker Rubio
Released: March 7, 2023
Publisher: Zonderkidz
Page Count: 240 pages
Ages: 8-12 years

I really enjoyed this book, because it had good illustrations and art throughout the book, from talking about how each woman carried out God’s purpose and plan for her life, and the openers and hooks at the beginning of each person’s description (what they did/specialty). It also included verses at the beginning of each person’s story to read and to reflect upon. I liked that it highlighted and showcased people in the Bible who normally aren’t seen as much in society and gave reasons why. – Melody, age 16

*My Epic Doodletastic Bible Storybook

Author: Bob Hartman
Illustrator: Gareth Williams
Released: February 14, 2023
Publisher: Zonderkidz
Page Count: 256 pages
Ages: 6-10 years

This was a really artsy book with big letters, (uncolored on arrival) but I managed to read through most of it! It included a lot of Bible stories and people in the Bible. How it was told in third person and had the setting and characters in it was important to me when reading it and gave life lessons and stories in general. – Melody, age 16

*Turtle Finds His Talent

Author: Lucille Williams
Illustrator:
Amanda Gulliver
Released: April 18, 2023
Publisher: Zonderkidz
Page Count: 20 pages
Ages: 2 – 6 years

Tanner the Turtle and his mama remind us that no matter how much we realize that others may have talents or other things we might not have, God has blessed every one of His children with many things that we may take for granted, even small things! I loved this book and the simple message, with even cuter animal friends. – Emily, age 14

*The Beginner’s Bible: Let’s Learn to Pray

Author: The Beginner’s Bible
Illustrator:
Amanda Gulliver
Released: February 14, 2023
Publisher: Zonderkidz
Page Count: 48 pages
Ages: 4 – 8 years

This book is divided up into three parts. There is an introduction to prayer; where, when, and how to pray, and the different types of prayer. In the part with the different types of prayers, it sometimes gives examples of how people in the Bible prayed.  There is also a “Prayer Time” which asks questions of times you have prayed certain prayers and another little section at the end that has a prayer you can pray. The pictures in the book are vibrant. It is written in a very kid-friendly way to easy-to-understand words but also makes it clear what prayer is. – Joyce, mom
