Empowered

by Melody, age 12

Whenever we read about other people’s lives (I’m talking about famous, well-known people in history or the news), we always think “Oh, wow!” Or “How can become like them? But in reality, these women were human, after all, and it was their strong faith and beliefs that made them brave to rise above the crowd to do big things.

This was a very moving book and I loved understanding more about certain aspects of the women that made them unique, but also about how they lived their lives. I liked the Bible verses that went along with their stories and the illustrations too.

These women were all brave, and even in the face of danger when they were risking their lives, or when something bad was happening to them, they knew God was in control, and they put Him in the center of it all.

One story that inspired me was Sophie’s story. She was incredibly courageous, as you will see if you read her story. She was also peaceful, which is hard to do in that specific situation.

A Note from Melody’s Mom:

The girls have read several books along the lines of ‘girls who changed the world’ but I love that this book showcases women who lived out their lives as faithful examples of God’s power and goodness. I was familiar with a few of these women and liked learning more. While the ‘girl power’ message is great, it is not always shared in a way that provides girls and young women practical ways to live that out in their lives. It’s great to say girls are amazing too, but do not have action steps to give them to overcome obstacles, it can be an even greater struggle. These stories are messages of hope and a glimpse of how ordinary people can do great things because of an extraordinary God.
